Sea rescue exercise and open ship of the sea rescue

Driving out, when others return to a safe harbour

More than 2.000 times each year, the sea rescuers are in operation on the North and Baltic Sea – in any weather and around the clock. Often times they are on their way to the sea, when other ships search for shelter in the harbour – voluntary and selfless.

The German Maritime Search and Rescue Association (DGzRS) is responsible for the search and rescue (SAR, Search and Rescue) in the case of sea emergencies. They were founded 1865 and are since then independent and solely funded by donations without any governmental or public funding.

The around 60 rescue units, spread across 55 stations between Borkum in the west and the Pomerian bay in the east, are ready for operation at all times. One of them is the rescue cruiser “Vormann Jantzen”. You can visit the ship during the Hanse Sail and watch a sea rescue exercise.

Nearly 1.000 sea rescuers are on standby around the clock – more than 800 of them on a voluntary basis. In 2018 they rescued around 360 persons in 2.156 operations from distress at sea or threatening dangers on sea. Since their founding, the DGzRS has counted over 85.000 rescued persons.
