Today at 12.45 pm the starting pistol was fired for the participating ships of the regatta of the traditional sailing ships. However there were only four ships taking part in the competition this year: the two schooners “Qualle” and “Skythia” as well as the single-masters “LE 89” and the “Ernestine”. Consequently there were two ships in two respective groups performing match races against each other.  “The course was ideally aligned for the traditional sailing ships. It was 6 sea miles long”, says Rainer Arlt who is the head of the regatta. Despite some rain in between the sailors stayed dry during the regatta. In the group of the schooner the “Skythia” took first place barely two minutes ahead of the “Qualle”. The “LE 89” prevailed against the “Ernestine” in the group of the single-masters. “We had great wind conditions and it was a lot of fun”, Arlt is pleased. In fact the “Ernestine” has already registered for next year.

First “OSPA Match Race Cup”
Parallel to the races of the traditional sailing ships the first “OSPA Match Race Cup” took place today. Four teams on structurally identical ocean-going yachts competed in a duel of boat vs. boat. In a dramatic final the crew of the Ostseewelle Hit-Radio Mecklenburg-Vorpommern barely prevailed against the team of the OSPA. The teams of EURAWASSER Nord GmbH and Glashäger Brunnen GmbH from Bad Doberan came in third and fourth. “The sailors on board of the yachts were excited and announced that they will join in again next year”, says race director Ralf Erik Kudra. The race was presented by Matthias Bohn, who is the OSPA press spokesman and a sailor himself. “Even the spectators in the OSPA-tent on the beach below the Teepott were absolutely delighted”, says Bohn. The OSPA donated the same-titled cup.

The award ceremonies for both races will be taking place on Sunday, 10th August, starting at 7 pm at the Hanse Sail stage in the city harbour.
