22nd Hanse Sail Rostock from August 9th to 12th 2012

Dear visitors of the Hanse Sail,

the maritime midsummer in Rostock and Warnemünde 2012 is especially characterised by two events. Early July the Warnemünder Woche takes place for the 75th time. The sailing competitions exist since 1926. Many weeks after this jubilee, traditional vessels sail to Rostock to participate in the 22. Hanse Sail., they have lived their first sailer life, when the competitions were born.

The oldest ships were built at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. They are still very popular for sailing activities and during „Open Ship.“ This year, the ships are sharing the attention with pleasure of the sail-friends with young and modern „traditional“ sailing ships.

The „Alexander v. Humboldt II“, short „Alex II“ (year of manufacture 2011), got a very special invitation of the Sail-Organizers, to call the port of Rostock in her maiden.

A sailing opportunity in the luxury segment offers the four-mastbarquentine „Star Flyer“, owned by Mikael Kraft. The 111,5 meter long ship is as old as the Hanse Sail, crosses in the Baltic Sea for the first time and will also call at Warnemünde at the 22. Hanse Sail. It is suitable to the topic of the Hanse Sail 2012 that after the windjammers in 2011 – the barquentines, brigantines and the topsail schooners will be presented more detailed.

Almost 140 years of shipping history are between the veterans and the „Star Flyer“, a range, in which approximately 250 traditional sailing ships and museum ships „bustle“. Those can be experienced on the 2. weekend in August, as only in a few harbours in the world. The participation of sailing ships newly built is good for the headline: „The traditional sailing is alive.“

But not only the ships present something new. The festival itself offers more and more every year. You can follow competitions in the sailing stadium or try trend sports.

„Living in the Hanseatic period“ is an experience area for old and young. Despite all innovations the Hanse Sail remains a popular event with a lot of attractions, e.g. riding with big wheel, free programmes on a dozen stages or strolling along the „International Market“. Highlights, even of the 22. Hanse Sail, are the fireworks on Saturday in Warnemünde and Rostock. These delight several hundred thousands visitors and even skippers and crews on board of old and new traditional sailing ships.
