From the GORCH FOCK to life-safers –
the Federal Navy offered a lot during 20 years of Sail
20 years of Hanse Sail – 20 years of Navy-involvement. Everything that the Navy has to offer has been deployed over 20 years of Sail-history: more than 100 floating units – also from international Navies like Mexico, Poland, England, Russia, France, Estonia, Norway, and Denmark; six appearances of the GORCH FOCK – the white ambassador; the historical cannon-crew of the naval college Mürwik; the Big Band of the German Armed Forces; the training ships NORDWIND and ASTA or the only licensed post box on the high sea; and a life-safer. During the 8th Hanse Sail, lieutenant commander of the tender DONAU, Helmut Greve, saved the life of a 72-year old Berliner woman, risking his own life. The woman got between the quay and a Polish minehunter and was about to drown when he saved her.

LISA VON LÜBECK – Hanseatic Cargo Ship rebuilt after a painting
A painting in Lübeck’s St. Mary’s Chruch and several design drawings – these were the only references that the society “Gesellschaft Weltkulturgut Hansestadt Lübeck” had for a cargo ship of the caravel-type from the 15th century. With the support of scientists and boatbuilders, the society members were still able to accomplish their goal: the replica LISA VON LÜBECK is floating and sailing and can pick up 60 passengers. Klaus Völsen, vice-chairman of Lübeck’s society, explains “Unlike the one-masted cogs of the Hanseatic times, a caravel with its three masts could transport much more goods – up to 700 tons.” They will head for Warnemünde on Sunday at 7.30 p.m..

Treat for the eyes at the anniversary-Sail: Miss Hanse Sail 2010
Their names are Ivonne, Vivienne, Julia, Dajana, and Kristina. They were the prettiest women of the past years. Together with notabilities of the city of Rostock, they form the jury of this year’s beauty contest. “They will judge the 20 beauties and take on the difficult task to crown the winner,” says Agnes Stüwe, regional director of the MGO (Miss Germany Organisation), who picked the 20 applicants in a selection process.

The Baltic Sail is alive
Cities of the Baltic region unite annually, to attract sailing enthusiastic visitors with traditional sailers. The Baltic Sail does not function as a trip-planner though. Eckhard Landgraf from the EU-project “Seaside” emphasizes, “We want to accomplish a joint platform for all countries bordering the Baltic Sea.” After the beginning of the Baltic Sail 2010 in Gdansk, Sassnitz, Halmstadt, Klaipeda, and now Rostock have been the hosts. The Baltic Sail will go on in 2011. The Swedish city Gävle will decide about its future participation in the Baltic Sail after the upcoming mayoral election. Eckhard Landgraf hopes for a Baltic Sail-growth: „Latvian and Russian partners would be great, and of course Lübeck-Travemünde.“

Partner-country Lithuania: Problems of the market economy
The transition to the market economy, completed in Lithuania in 1994, caused considerable economic problems. Germany, being Lithuania’s third biggest export- (10.5 %) and second biggest import-partner (14.9 %) is challenged. The German-Baltic Chamber of Industry and Commerce already provides assistance. Besides incoming investments and budget consolidation, it is the export-growth that Lithuanians see as an important factor for a reliable economic expansion. Energy production has a big relevance. Biomass and wind power are getting supported by the EU-Funding. A great goal for the Baltic Republic is: the gross domestic product needs to increase, the taxes need to decrease.

The weather-god holds dear to the Sail-Saturday:
bright sun all day long
Those who were prepared for the showers with umbrellas did everything right during the Sail-opening. On Friday, people peeped from under their rain shelters whenever the sky sent some rain down to thirsty Mother Nature. Today’s Saturday will not show any of the instability and lives down the earlier mixtures of sun, clouds and showers. Today will be the most beautiful day of the Sail. The sun will shine all day long and raises the temperature up to 26 °C. A westerly breeze keeps a pleasant climate. Hic sail, hic salta!
