Sail on Friday

„I hereby declare the 20th Hanse Sail open”
Governor Erwin Sellering, patron of the biggest maritime event of the state, opened the anniversary-Sail on the NDR-Stage on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 5.45 p.m. with these words. Sellering said beforehand, “The Hanse Sail is an outstanding advertisement for Rostock and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Every year I am excited to see the pictures of the Hanse Sail being spread all over Germany. It becomes clear to everyone – this is what I have to visit!”
Norbert Fönings, “De fischelante Sachse” walked the 348 km from Leipzig to Rostock on foot and was received with cheers. Flanked by seven gun-shots, a beer barrel of the Hanse Sail’s main sponsor – the Hanseatische Brauerei Rostock - was broached by the governor. In the museum-port there was a launch waiting for the governor, the mayor Roland Methling, his wife, and president of citizenship Karina Jens, the parliamentary state secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building, and Urban Development Enak Ferlemann, and other participants of the opening-ceremony, to bring them to Warnemünde to the reception of the Navy on the tender WERRA .

Complete with a stamp
Ship-stamps are desired during the Hanse Sail and other windjammer-gatherings. In the “Hanse Sail Magazin aktuell 2010”, there is a column with round arrangements for board-stamps, including one for the GULDEN LEEUW. Owners are the Dutch families Töller and Postuma. Only coming into business in June, the Netherlands’ biggest schooner with a length of 70 m, is on its maiden voyage. In a telephone conversation with Mirjam Postuma on the high sea, heading for Kristiansand, she reports about her first experiences with the GULDEN LEEUW. At the end of the phone call she claims “Don’t forget our stamp.” The Hanse Sail Association has declared to get a stamp for the GULDEN LEEUW manufactured in Rostock. The GULDEN LEEUW is, therefore, complete with a stamp at the 20th Hanse Sail.

Gun salutes as a warm welcome –
Clubs approach with historical guns
Boom! The hollow bang of the historical gun Concordia fills the air, as another sailer enters the harbour of Warnemünde. Gun salutes as a warm welcome – “we continue an old, maritime tradition”, says Manfred König, member of Rostock’s gun club Concordia 1848. Together with some colleagues he brought along two guns for the Sail. In former times, the ships used to fire their guns until they were emptied – to show that they came in peace.”, says König. Today it is the opposite. The Concordia, which was used at Rostock’s city wall for defense in the 18th century, could be heard on Thursday during the Sail-opening. During the “Parade of the Nations” on Saturday, there will be more shooting.
The „old ladies“ appear as a pair
They are the stars of the 20th Hanse Sail Rostock because they are the oldest and largest, still active windjammers of the world: the Russian SEDOV with its home port Murmansk and the four-masted-ship KRUZENSHTERN from Kaliningrad. The SEDOV with a length of 177.5 m was built in the Kieler Friedrich-Krupp-Germaniawerft as MAGDALENE VINNEN II in 1921. It will celebrate its 90th birthday next year. The KRUZENSHTERN is only 5 years younger. It was also built in Germany on the Joh.-C-Tecklenborg-Werft at the Geeste in Bremerhaven as PADUA. Today, the almost 115 m long ship is the last, still active representative of the famous P-liners, which were popular because of their fast transatlantic passages.
At home on a sail ship
For the guests of the Hanse Sail it is just a trip – for Anna Hoffmann from Delmenhorst near Bremen, sailing on the old JAN HUYGEN is her daily routine and her bread and butter. The 26-year old has studied history of art and history of architecture in Dutch Groningen. “To have things in hand”, as she says. But, is she ever going to use it? Anna grins, “As long as we have fun, we will live on the ship all year long.” “We” – that is Anna, her Dutch boyfriend Herman van Linschoten and the dog Bo. They bought the JAN HUYGEN, a cargo ship from 1909 that was going to be scrapped, about four years ago. “A Dutchman spotted and saved the ship in a Danish port”, says Anna. Of the Dutch Kufftjalk-type, there are only 6 exemplars left in the world. Anna has been predominantly living on the sea for more than seven years now. “Right after school I went on board of a Dutch ship, learned how to sail, and met Herman.” By now, Anna is an able-bodied seaman and the JAN HUYGEN is their joint business. During the summer, it is sailing trips that make the money – also during the Hanse Sail. “During the winter, you have to be creative.”, says Anna. She and Herman work in a small shipyard in their Dutch home port Workum. Their ship functions as a hotel in the port. Once it was an attraction on a Christmas-market. The JAN HUYGEN is located at Rostock’s port, berth 81, bitt 34-36.
Captain of the ABEL TASMAN
came with high expectations to the anniversary-Sail
The crew of the Dutch gaff-rigged schooner ABEL TASMAN enjoys the morning sun on Sail-Wednesday. “We were on the way for ten days, going from Denmark to Rostock, and finally got here yesterday. We are preparing ourselves for some interesting Sail-days.”, says captain and owner Jeroen Postuma and his wife Marian Ververda adds, “We are hoping for lots of guests, who would like to sail along with us.” Day trips (10 a.m. - 5 p.m.) on the 1913 built and 1989 as a charter-ship rebuilt ABEL TASMAN are accessible at a price of 45 Euro. The highlight on Friday, an evening tour (7 p.m. - 11 p.m.), will be offered for 65 Euro. Children under the age of 12 will get 10 percent off. Up to 60 guests can sail along on the 40 m long and 6 m wide ship. “This is not our first stay in Rostock”, says Captain Postuma, “and we always had pleasant and economically profitable days during the Hanse Sail Rostock.”
Lietuvos Respublika – a 12,000 years persisting history
The first signs of human settlements of present-day Lithuania go back 1200 years. Between the 9th and the 13th century it was a part of the Kievan Rus. Beforehand, the tribes were living in a strict caste-structure, practised agriculture and traded goods. Lithania was first mentioned in the “Quedlinburger Annalen” in 1009. Archbishop and friar Bruno Bonifacius of Quedlinburg wrote about “Litua” how he wanted to convert the Gentiles to Christianity. But he was not successful. Together with 18 of his companions he was beheaded by the Gentiles. In the 13th century, Grand Duke Mindaugas united the Lithuanian princedoms, became a Christian in 1251 and got crowned king. The inforcement of Christianity in 1387, the founding of the city and diocese Vil-nius, as well as the founding of the university were milestones of Lithuania’s way to become a big power that stretched to the Black Sea and ruled areas, which are homes for Poles, Hungarians, and Czechs today. The “Tannenbergschlacht”, where they fought with Poles against the German order of knights in 1410, and the “Union of Lublin” stabilised the power of the kingdom of Lithuania and Poland.
Friday – hopefully – a beautiful Sail-day without any rain
The tables at the caterings of the Sail-area are fully covered and waiting for guests. The sky, however, is also covered and none of the visitors wants rain. We might get around it. There may be occasional showers with a maximum temperature of 19 °C , that depress the Sail-exhilaration. But that’s about it.
