The harbourmaster & crew are the ushers of the Hanse Sail 2010

For Rostock’s harbourmaster „the end of the rope is through.” Gisbert Ruhnke says, “We are booked out, and we have berths for all of the 230 ships of this big event.” More than 100 ships will be located in Rostock’s Port. The so-called “packets”, starting at the level of the “Borwin” and reaching up to the warehouses, will consist of six ships in a row, “otherwise we would have not been able to accomodate the tremendous number of guests”, says the harbourmaster. In Warnemünde, there are three of the wolrd’s largest windjammers – the SEDOV, the KRUZENSHTERN (Russia), and the DAR MLODZIEZY (Poland). Traditionally, the German Navy participates in the Hanse Sail; this year with one of their greats – the tender “Werra” with a length of 110 m. “For the first time, the quay at the Wadan-Shipyard can be offered for passenger ships. The berths in the yacht harbour Hohe Düne have proven themselves successfully. About 40 ships are located there. Traditionally, there is enough room for more than 30 sailers at the cargo-and fishing-port Marienehe. Recently handed over after a redevelopment, a quay area near the Neptun Shipyard becomes apparent. “It ideally suits around 20 traditional ships,” says Ruhnke, giving thanks to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency for allowing the STUBNITZ to use the pier right by the institute during the days of the Sail. “We do not reject any guests. In urgent cases, the Navy would help us out with berths in their port.”

Welcoming speech of Rostock’s mayor Roland Methling
“You will never make it”, was the outcry of many sceptics with reference to the first Hanse Sail in the summer of 1991. Now, we are celebrating the 20th Sail. It is a wonderful, attractive, maritime festival with a national and international charisma. More than 200 ships take home the feeling of Rostock’s hospitality to their ports in 13 countries. I often get asked about the secret of success of the Hanse Sail. It is the enthusiasts, who – in many cases in an honorary office – live and guarantee the hospitality. It is the crews who like to call at Rostock’s port. And it is the patrons and sponsors – without them the Hanse Sail would not be possible at all. Thanks to all those, who have locked the Hanse Sail into their hearts and who are fully committed year in and year out. For the 20th Hanse Sail, i wish all the guests, organisers, helpers, and sponsors much pleasure as well as exciting and diversified days.

Floating Hotels land in Warnemünde
They are the luxury hotels among the ships: cruise liners, such as the NORWEGIAN SUN or the CHRYSTAL SYMPHONY. Both of them land in Warnemünde during the Hanse Sail, disembarking thousands of holidaymakers. The NORWEGIAN SUN, which was built in Bremerhaven in 2001, belongs to a US-shipping company, brings 1,900 passengers along. The four-star-cruiser has a length of 260 m and ranges 8 m below the water surface. The SUN mostly cruises in distant realms like the Caribbean and Alaska. Yet, one can also travel accross the Baltic Sea with it. Before entering Warnemünde on Friday morning, it has already had a stop in Kopenhagen. The cruise started in Dover. The next stops after Rostock are Tallin, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Nynäshamn, before it will return to Dover. Because of strict safety rules on the international ship traffic, visitors of the Sail are not allowed to go on board on one of the cruise liners that land in Warnemünde from Thursday to Saturday. However, a look from the outside is worth one’s while. In total, 33 luxury liners from 26 shipping companies head for Warnemünde this season; therefore, one has 113 chances to watch the floating luxury hotels as they enter and leave Warnemünde. A record for the port.

Bathrooms and WCs will be provided – The event and its partners
„We ensure that the Hanse Sail is a ‚clean event’ for nineteen years now,” says manager of the Rostocker company “Toi, toi & Dixi – Sanitärsysteme GmbH Rostock” Manfred Otto, granting an insight into his records: 18 WC-containers, 30 portable toilets, 4 shower-containers, and sanitary installations at some of the bigger stages were put up by the staff of the company in Warnemünde, Marienehe, and Rostock’s port. Fifteen office-containers will be used by paramedics, watch duty, security, technicians and parking attendants as a temporary workplace with a camping site atmosphere. “Our services also include essential organization and barriers on the place of event,” says Otto, referring to the two kilometres of construction hoarding.

Saxons meet Saxons at the anniversary-Sail Rostock
In the year 2000, the „SachsenSail“ came into being. The first sailing tour started with Leipziger businessmen on the Ukranian windjammer KHERSONES from Karlskrona heading for the 10th Hanse Sail in Rostock. Since then, many trips on the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean have happened. Saxon initiators, certainly, do not embark on a journey at the sea to meet other Saxons in the first place. They are looking for business partners. This year, they are in Sweden’s capital Stockholm. Starting here, they take the Russian KRUZENSHTERN and head for the 20th Hanse Sail in Rostock. The sailors of this year’s SachsenSail will be extended a warm welcome in Warnemünde on Thursday afternoon. And, purely by chance, there is a television crew of the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk from Leipzig at the Sail in Rostock.

Rain probability lies at 60 percent at the Sail-opening
Hanse Sail visitors must be brave. For the opening of the 20th Sail we expect a rain probability of, believe it or not, 60 percent. A southwester with wind force 2 will blow away umbrellas from visitors that are trying to arm themselves from the rain. However, real Sail-visitors are not frightened by these kinds of weather forecasts. On the contrary, they will boozily celebrate the anniversary-Sail.
