Haikutter-Regatta: Finish on the high sea

There was a force 3-4 wind in Nysted/Denmark at the start of the 2nd Haikutter-Regatta. The thirteen fishing vessels, as well as the spontaneously participating post-yacht HIORTEN, started off under sails to cover the distance of 32 sea miles to Rostock. However, the wind ceased on the high sea...

After a long time of a very slow progress, the chief of the regatta Finn Hermanssen reacted on this circumstance. The fireboat and the ELBE 1set up a finishing line on the high sea about 12 sea miles away from Warnemünde. The first cutter to cross the provisional mark was the CARMELAN (Ger) at 5.30 p.m.. At 5.53 p.m. the German HANSINE came home. After the calm, squalls with wind 9 forces were forcasted, wherefore the ships started their engines immediately.Arround 8 p.m. they reached Rostock's Port. Ships from Germany, Sweden and Denmark participated in the opening event of the Hanse Sail.

The Haikutter-Regatta represents tradtitional sail-shipping at a high rate. The vessels have been lavishly reconstructed and preserved by club members and private persons. It is estimated that more than 8,000 of these former vessels have been built at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. They have been superior to their rivals because of their speed and because of a constructional finesse, which could speed up fishing technologies. Ships from Germany, Sweden, and Denmark took part in the prelude-event of the Hanse Sail.
