The most beautiful water-production of the year

21. Hanse Sail Rostock 11.8. - 14.8.2011

On the secound weekend in August each year, 250 traditional sailing vessels, Museum steamboats and guest ships pass through the moles of Warnemünde several times on their way to the passenger terminal or to Rostock’s city harbour and back. Who finds a seat on the moles, sits in the first row indeed. Full-rigged ships, barquentines, brigs and schooner with a total area of 60.000 square meters, but also steamships like the big ice-breaker STETTIN or the slim HYDROGRAF take part.

A direct contact to the traditional sailing ships and the crews, the visitor can find on the shopping mile in Warnemünde and Rostock, by “Open Ship” or when listening to a shanty, even like the program ashore of the Hanse Sail with music, dance, exhibitions, Ferries wheels and rollmop offer an opulent scope for the most beautiful water-production of the year.

The total length of the official participating ships is six kilometres and they are over 12.000 years old! Here you can say: the older, the more beautiful.

Even more exciting as a mole place, is to take part in this water spectacle, e.g. when setting sail on board of the traditional sailing ships. Meanwhile, over 3.000 sailers use the opportunity and contribute therefore to preserve these valuable, maritime cultural assets.

The highlight for interested spectators is finally a flight with one of the floatplanes, which start and land at the river Warnow at the International meeting of sea-plane aviators.

Apart from the official participating ships you can find, more ore less, everything on the “Water-stage” around Warnemünde and at the river Warnow, which is able to swim. From cruise liners and ferries to tugs and special vessels of the German Navy up to yachts and rubber boats.

Actors or spectators – never mind, this maritime dramaturgy you can find rarely and it inspires yearly more than a million visitors.
